The Irish Open is a major professional golf tournament in Ireland and a regular fixture on the DP World Tour. First played in 1927, it is one of Europe’s longest-running national open championships and attracts leading international golfers alongside players from Ireland and the wider British Isles. Golf is an individual sport, so competitors do not represent fixed teams; each player aims to complete the course in the fewest strokes. The event is generally played over four rounds of 18 holes, with the champion decided by the lowest total score. Its venue changes between editions, giving the tournament a distinctive setting and testing players on different Irish courses. Past host venues include Royal County Down, Portstewart Golf Club, Lahinch Golf Club, Mount Juliet Estate and The K Club. Irish Open champions and notable participants have included Rory McIlroy, Shane Lowry and Padraig Harrington, while international stars such as Jon Rahm have also competed. The tournament combines elite golf, challenging course conditions and Ireland’s celebrated sporting atmosphere, making it a prominent event for fans following professional golf in Ireland.
