The Prefontaine Classic is an annual track and field meet held at Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon, one of the sport’s best-known stadiums and home to the University of Oregon Ducks. Named for Oregon distance-running star Steve Prefontaine, the event began in 1975 and is part of the World Athletics Diamond League, bringing elite competitors to the United States for races, jumps and throws. Rather than competing as traditional teams, athletes represent their countries, with some also associated with professional clubs or training groups. The program commonly features sprint and distance races, hurdles, relays, pole vault, long jump and other field events, although the schedule can vary from year to year. Olympic champions, world champions and leading international contenders regularly compete, making the meet a major occasion for record attempts and season-best performances. Hayward Field’s track, grandstands and history contribute to the atmosphere, while its location in Eugene connects the competition to a strong regional running tradition. For track and field fans, the Prefontaine Classic offers a chance to follow top athletes, compare results across disciplines and see world-class athletics in a historic venue.
