Cowes Week is one of the world’s longest-running and largest sailing regattas, held each summer on the Solent off Cowes, Isle of Wight, England. Established in 1826, the event typically runs for eight days in early August and brings together thousands of sailors and hundreds of boats. Rather than competing in fixed teams or on a stadium field, participants race as crews aboard yachts, with skippers responsible for tactics, navigation and boat handling. The fleet is divided into classes according to boat type, size and performance, allowing a varied programme of closely matched races for experienced professionals and amateur sailors alike. Races take place on courses across the Solent, where tides, changing winds and busy shipping lanes make local knowledge an important advantage. Cowes itself serves as the event’s shore-side hub, with the harbour, waterfront and nearby sailing facilities welcoming competitors and spectators. Organised by Cowes Week Limited, the regatta combines competitive yacht racing with a wider programme of social events, making Cowes Week a landmark in the British sailing calendar.
