Preliminary Regattas Explore the latest Preliminary Regattas information from the America's Cup at your fingertips

Sailing Preliminary Regattas bring national teams and individual crews together to compete on a marked water course, where skill, tactics and changing weather shape each race. Unlike stadium sports, sailing takes place on an open-water venue, with race areas set near the host city and supported by shore-based facilities for athletes, officials and spectators. Competitors race in designated boat classes, including single-handed and double-handed dinghies, skiffs and board events, with each crew or sailor representing a country or sailing program. Preliminary races test boat speed, navigation, teamwork and the ability to read wind direction, current and course conditions. Results are determined by finishing positions across multiple races, with points accumulated under the event’s scoring system; the strongest competitors advance to the next stage or medal race, depending on the competition format. Race schedules and course layouts may be adjusted for safety or insufficient wind. For fans following sailing results, the preliminary regattas offer an early view of leading teams, standout athletes and potential contenders, while showcasing the precision and endurance required in international sailing competition.
