This Week in Sport: 18th – 24th November 2019

The next seven days will provide plenty of unmissable sporting action, including the Davis Cup Finals which begins on Monday, where 18 national teams will battle it out on the hard courts of Madrid. Tuesday sees the Florida Panthers take on the Philadelphia Flyers in the NHL as the visitors look to snap a three-game losing streak. Two Western Conference heavyweights will lock horns in the NBA on Wednesday as the Denver Nuggets host the Houston Rockets. The DP World Tour Championship gets underway on Thursday as the European Tour season concludes. England’s tour of New Zealand continues on Friday as Day 2 of the 1st test plays out at the Bay Oval. Saturday provides a tantalising Premier League clash as Manchester City host Chelsea with both sides looking to keep their title aspirations alive. The week ends with an offering from the NFL as the in-form San Francisco 49ers welcome the Green Bay Packers to Levi’s Stadium in a pivotal NFC clash.

Monday 18th November 3:00PM GMT – Tennis: Davis Cup Finals Day 1

The group stage of the Davis Cup Finals gets underway at the Caja Mágica in Madrid.

Three matches open the Davis Cup Finals group stage. Croatia begin their title defence against Russia. Stars like Ćorić and Čilić will have to contend with young Russian phenom Daniil Medvedev. Colombia dominated Sweden in qualifying and now look to upset a Belgium side led by 11th ranked David Goffin. In the day’s other match, ATP Finals contestant Matteo Berrettini will look to lead Italy past a Canadian side with two top-twenty players. Today is full of action you won’t want to miss.

Tuesday 19th November 12:00AM GMT (Wednesday 20th) – Ice hockey: Florida Panthers versus Philadelphia Flyers

In the NHL, the Florida Panthers host the Philadelphia Flyers at the BB&T Center in Sunrise, Florida.

This Tuesday hockey fixture sees two ambitious teams face off in Florida. The home team Panthers are challenging for the lead in the Atlantic Division. They are 10-5-5 and are led by the goal-scoring tandem of Evgenii Dadonov and Jonathan Huberdeau. The Flyers currently occupy a Wild Card space at 10-6-4. The season-ending event of the European Tour gets underway at the Jumeirah Golf Estates in Dubai.

There will be some unmissable action as the DP World Tour Championship plays out at the Jumeirah Golf Estates. This event always provides moments of sporting excellence as some of the world’s greatest golfers meet in Dubai. After a gruelling season, the World Tour Championship represents the final event of the season, with several players still in the mix to take home the crown. After Tommy Fleetwood won the Nedbank Challenge last week in extraordinary fashion, the Englishman now resides second in the Race to Dubai standings and will be hopeful of topping off a successful season with a win in Dubai.

Friday 22nd November 22:00PM GMT (Thursday 21st) – Cricket: New Zealand versus England

Two cricketing rivals will battle it out on Day 2 of the 1st Test at the Bay Oval in Tauranga.

England’s tour of New Zealand continues on Friday as the two nations meet for the second day of the Test match at the Bay Oval in Tauranga. These two sides have already brought us plenty of unforgettable sporting moments this year, not least the World Cup final which was settled by a super over. Though there is slightly less on the line this time round, England will be desperate to reign victorious on their travels as they try to improve the results of their red ball team in comparison tot heir limited over results.

Saturday 23rd November 5:30PM GMT – Football: Manchester City versus Chelsea

Manchester City and Chelsea play an important Premier League match at the Etihad Stadium in Manchester.

Manchester City will welcome Chelsea to the Etihad Stadium this week as they look to bounce back from their disappointing defeat at Anfield a fortnight ago. City’s title hopes were dealt a serious blow as they faltered to a 3-1 loss to title rivals Liverpool, with the result leaving them fourth in the standings. Meanwhile, Frank Lampard’s men will travel north full of confidence after winning each of their last six outings in the Premier League. Before the International Break, they eased to a 2-0 win over Crystal Palace and the Blues will look to continue their impressive run of form as they contend with one of the trickiest away assignments in the league.

Sunday 24th November 1:20AM GMT (Monday 25th) – American Football: San Francisco 49ers versus Green Bay Packers

In the NFL, the San Francisco 49ers host the Green Bay Packers at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara.

 

Two of the top teams in the NFL go head-to-head. The 49ers have one of the best offences in the NFL and a truly stalwart defence. In particular, their rushing offence is one of the league’s best. However, they must contend with a truly fantastic season from Aaron Rodgers. With only ten games played, Rodgers has helped lead the Packers to their best record since 2016. With two great teams taking the field, you won’t want to miss this one.

Honourable mentions around the globe go to the cricket as Bangladesh face India in the 2nd test all week long, New Zealand will host England as the nations contest the 1st Test of the tour and Australia will host Pakistan this week as the nations contest the 1st Test in Brisbane. There is an unmissable bout in the world of boxing as heavyweights Deontay Wilder and Luis Ortiz meet at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. Meanwhile, Ohio State lock horns with Penn State in NCAA College Football on Saturday. Action will come from theDavis Cup all week long as the 18 nations battle it out for supremacy in Madrid. The European Rugby Champions Cup resumes this week as Munster take on Racing Metro 92 and Harlequins face Bath. The heavyweight clashes continue to come thick and fast in the NBA, with this week’s action headlined by Boston Celtic’s trip to face the LA Clippers, the Denver Nuggets’ clash with Boston and the Clippers’ tussle with Houston. There are plenty more exciting games in the NFLtoo as the New England Patriots meet the Dallas Cowboys and the Philadelphia Eagles face the Seattle Seahawks.
