Event of the Day: Singapore F1 Grand Prix

Our event of the day...

is the Formula 1 Singapore Grand Prix at the Marina Bay Street Circuit. One of the most characterful venues of the F1 calendar, the night race usually delivers quite a spectacle and this year should be no different. With only 3 points separating first placed Lewis Hamilton and second placed Sebastian Vettel in the drivers standings, whatever happens in Singapore will have a profound impact on how the season is shaping up going into its final few months with only six races remaining after today. A lot has happened away from the track in the build-up to this weekend with Carlos Sainz set to join Renault next year and McLaren ending their engine partnership with Honda to switch to Renault. With a lot of action off the track and a very close title race on it, today’s race will be an intriguing and action-packed occasion.

The closeness of the drivers standings was reflected in the final practice session on Saturday with Red Bull’s Max Verstappen fastest, finishing 0.072 seconds faster than Vettel who was 0.07 seconds quicker than Hamilton. It promised to be a tight qualifying session and Vettel managed to clinch his fourth pole position in Singapore in impressive style. Red Bull drivers Verstappen and Daniel Ricciardo have looked quick all weekend and will begin the race in second and third on the grid. Hamilton will start back in fifth with Mercedes looking off the pace this weekend as expected. This means Vettel is in a strong position to retake the lead in the drivers standings from title rival Hamilton by the end of the day. It’s going to be an exciting day of racing with Ferrari and Red Bull looking strong.

Honourable mentions...

go to Super Sunday in the Premier League with Chelsea vs Arsenal at Stamford Bridge the standout fixture. Arsenal will look to improve on their record at the Bridge having lost on each of their last 5 visits in the Premier League. Both sides will be hoping for big performances from their new strikers Álvaro Morata and Alexandre Lacazette in their bid to win this London derby.

In Rugby Union, Wasps have a chance to return to the top of the table as they host Harlequins at the Ricoh Arena in the Aviva Premiership action. Super League sees league leaders Castleford Tigers travel to DW Stadium to take on Wigan Warriors. In Golf it’s the final round of the BMW Championship at Conway Farms Golf Club in Lake Forest, Illinois. Marc Leishman, Jason Day and Rickie Fowler are among the players near the top of the leaderboard. The NFL sees the Green Bay Packers travel to the impressive Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, Georgia for their clash against the Atlanta Falcons.
