Event of the Day: Winnipeg Jets versus Calgary Flames

Our event of the day is the NHL clash between the Winnipeg Jets and the Calgary Flames at Bell MTS Place. Both organisations currently lead their respective divisions, however it is the home side who are the more in-form team of late. The Jets have won seven of their last eight games and currently find themselves on a two-game winning streak. Meanwhile, the Flames have lost each of their last three NHL fixtures and will be desperate to snap that streak in Winnipeg tonight. Two of the league’s most prolific goal scorers will go head-to-head in this one, as the Jets’ Mark Scheifele will attempt to outscore the Flames’ Johnny Gaudreau. Scheifele goes into tonight’s clash having scored 22 goals on the season in just 37 appearances on the ice. He is already just one goal short of last season’s personal tally of 23 and he will be eager to surpass that total against the Flames today. Only the Toronto Maple Leafs and Tampa Bay Lightning have amassed more wins in the NHL than the Jets this year who have won 24 games already, with the majority coming at home.

The Jets have been tough to beat at the MTS Centre this term and will be looking for their 14thwin of the season there tonight. Johnny Gaudreau and the Calgary Flames have also had an impressive season thus far, despite their recent run of poor form. The 25-year-old winger has been key to the Flames’ success this season, scoring 16 times already. His remarkable form has inspired the Flames to dominate the Pacific Division this year. They lead the division in goals scored, points won and games won, and also have a far superior goal difference of +24, which could prove crucial come the end of the season. The two sides have already met this season, on that occasion the Flames ran out 6-3 winners over the Jets. In that game, Flames’ star man Johnny Gaudreau registered a goal and an assist, and he’ll be as eager as anyone to score again tonight to help his side snap their three-game losing streak. It should be a great ice hockey game in Winnipeg this evening between two competitive sides.

Honourable mentions around the globe go to the Premier League match between Southampton and West Ham United at St. Mary’s Stadium. Southampton followed up their remarkable win against Arsenal with a 3-1 victory over Huddersfield last weekend, and new manager Ralph Hasenhüttl has made an inspiring start to life on the south coast. Meanwhile, after recently winning four games on the bounce, West Ham fell to a 2-0 defeat at the hands of Watford last time out and the Hammers will be desperate to bounce straight back from that disheartening result. There is also a busy night in the NBA, as the Houston Rockets host the Boston Celtics in the headliner of the night. The action at Alexandra Palace gets back underway today, as the World Darts Championships resumes for Day 12 of the tournament. Finally, there is international cricket in South Africa as the hosts welcome Pakistan for Day 2 of the First Test at SuperSport Park.

Whatever you’re watching, enjoy!
