Event of the Day: West Ham versus Liverpool

Our event of the day is the Premier League tie between West Ham and Liverpool at the London Stadium. The hosts will be looking to bounce back after losing three straight games, whilst Liverpool will want to consolidate their lead atop the table after dropping points last time out against Leicester. Since securing an impressive win over Arsenal last month, West Ham have failed to win any of their last three games, leaving them 12th in the table. The Hammers bolstered their squad in the winter window, adding Samir Nasri and Mesaque Dju to their ranks. But arguably their best bit of business was handing Marko Arnautović a contract extension, after the Austrian looked set to make a big money move to China earlier on in the window. The east Londoners have already secured two big scalps at home this term, having got the better of both Arsenal and Manchester United at the old Olympic stadium and they will be hoping for another unlikely win in tonight’s huge clash against the league-leaders.

Jürgen Klopp’s Liverpool have been the stand-out team of the campaign so far and currently sit two points clear of reigning champions Manchester City. Mohamed Salah once again leads the way in the goal scoring stakes for Liverpool, having notched 19 times in all competitions so far. The Egyptian also leads the way in the Premier League Golden Boot race with 16 goals in his 24 appearances this season. Klopp was one of six managers who remained dormant in last month’s window, failing to sign a single player. However, the German will be more than happy with his star-studded squad and will hope he has the players at his disposal to secure Liverpool’s first Premier League title. Today should be an exciting game between two sides desperate for a win.

Honourable mentions around the globe go to the cricket in Australia where the hosts are facing Sri Lanka in day 4 of the 2nd Test. The tourists face a near-impossible test today as they look to make up the 499-run deficit after Australia have submitted an impressive performance at the crease. Elsewhere, there is action in the NBA as the Brooklyn Nets host the Milwaukee Bucks at the Barclays Center. Both sides are in playoff contention as the Bucks lead the way in the east whilst Brooklyn reside sixth in the standings despite losing their last two games. In the NHL, the Toronto Maple Leafs will take to the ice with the Anaheim Ducks who will be looking to snap their three-game losing streak. The World Grand Prix also gets underway today in the snooker as the world’s best players battle it out for the £100,000 prize money.

Whatever you’re watching, enjoy!
