Event of the Day: Sussex v Glamorgan

Our event of the day is the Vitality T20 Blast fixture between Sussex and Glamorgan at the 1st Central County Ground in Sussex. A win for the hosts would put them within touching distance of their opponents, who currently sit fourth in the table. Victory for Glamorgan would secure their place in the quarter finals. The visitors will be hoping for a repeat of the performance they displayed on Friday, where they convincingly swept aside Hampshire. Captain Colin Ingram continued his fine form, hitting 71 not out as Glamorgan won by eight wickets. Ingram has now scored the greatest number of runs in the T20 Blast since 2016. Kiran Carlson also impressed with the bat. The 20-year-old’s unbeaten 31 helped Glamorgan chase down their target of 151 with ease. A similar batting display today would surely see Glamorgan notch up their sixth win in seven games, their one defeat coming to Somerset on Sunday.

Sussex were equally as accomplished with the bat on Thursday. They managed an impressive 159 for 2 against Surrey off just 13 overs, before the match was abandoned due to the weather. Captain Luke Wright reached his half century, before being bowled for 55. Laurie Evans hit four sixes on his way to 48 not out. With the rain falling and lightening forecast, both sides had to settle with a no result point. Sussex must win today to keep their hopes of a quarter final place alive. They will take heart from their performances against Surrey on Thursday and table topping Somerset, who they narrowly lost to last week. However, Sussex are yet to win a home match this season. This record will have to improve if they are to stand any chance of reaching the quarter-finals. With both sides vying for quarter-final spots, this will be a crucial match.

Honourable mentions around the globe go to the Cincinnati Open at the Lindner Family Tennis Centre on the ATP and WTA World Tour. Elsewhere in the USA, the second match in the MLB series between the LA Dodgers and San Francisco Giants gets underway at Dodgers Stadium. Qualification for the most prestigious prize in club football continues across Europe with multiple Champions League second leg matches, including AEK Athens versus Celtic at the Athens Olympic Stadium. Further football can be found across England, as the first round of the Caraboa Cup begins.
