Event of the Day: Men’s Final at the US Open

Our event of the day is the Men’s Final at the US Open. Juan Martín del Potro and Novak Djokovic are going head to head for the chance to win the championship in what should be a close and hard-fought matchup. Del Potro made the final after the retirement of Rafael Nadal in their semi-final; at the time, the Argentinean was leading 7-6 6-2 when Rafa had to leave the game due to a knee injury. On the other side, Djokovic reached the final after beating Kei Nishikori 6-3 6-4 6-2. Both players arrive in good shape, playing great tennis and showing impressive focus on the court. Delpo will try to win the second Grand Slam of his career nine years after he won his first (US Open 2009). He has only lost one set in the whole tournament and has defeated great rivals like Fernando Verdasco, John Isner and the already mentioned Nadal.

It’s not so different for Nole, as the former No. 1 player had a similar path to the finals, only losing two sets in the entire tournament. By winning the title, Djokovic will become a three-time US Open champion (2011, 2015), as well as the only player in both ATP and WTA to win two Grand Slams this year - he won Wimbledon a few months ago. There are several factors that make us believe we are going to enjoy this game very much. Del Potro ranks fourth in aces 68; he’s recorded 82% in first serves won and has won 28 break points. Djokovic has his arguments too, ranking second in break points won with 31 and fifth in second serves won with 61%. It is very possible that we shall see one of the best Grand Slam finals in recent times seeing the level of tennis these two players have shown so far.

Honourable mentions around the world go to the first week of competition of the NFL. The league will be opening a new season with some interesting matchups featuring the Vikings receiving the new-look 49ers at U.S. Bank Stadium, while the Patriots open their season hosting the Texans at Gillette Stadium. The closing of the matchday will feature one of the greatest rivalries in the league: the Bears and the Packers at Lambeau Field for Sunday Night Football. The Indian Tour of England nears its conclusion with the Third Day of the Fifth Test. The Tour of Britain has its final stage, Stage 8, taking place in London. The Vuelta a España has its 15th stage starting from Ribera de Arriba and arriving at the Lakes of Covadonga. The BMW Championship will have its last day of competition. The Premiership Rugby season continues with the conclusion of the second week of competition with the game between Sale Sharks and Worcester Warriors. The NRL finals continue with Broncos facing Dragons, while the UEFA Nations League continues with the Netherlands visiting France at the Stade de France, Ukraine playing Slovenia and Denmark taking on Wales amongst today’s games.

Whatever you’re watching, enjoy!
