Event of the Day: Liverpool versus Arsenal

Our event of the day is the Premier League fixture between Liverpool and Arsenal at Anfield. Liverpool are 1st in the league, unbeaten through the first 19 games of the season. Under Jürgen Klopp, Liverpool have become an unstoppable force that few are able to match. Meanwhile, Arsenal are enjoying a reasonably successful season of their own, but the success of other teams such as their opponents today, have limited them to 5th place. However, they remain a threat to Liverpool so expect a thrilling match between the two sides today. May 6th 2018, the penultimate game of the 2017-18 Premier League season. This is the last game that Liverpool lost in the Premier league, losing 1-0 to Chelsea. After winning in the final week of last season, Liverpool have gone on to start this season with sixteen wins and three draws. They are six points clear of second place Spurs and have led the Premier League since December 8th. The last time they remained at the top of the Premier League table for this long was between March 30th and May 5th, 2014. They have only conceded seven goals through the first nineteen games, with goalkeeper Alisson keeping twelve clean sheets. These seven goals have mostly come as consolation goals in big wins for Liverpool. Only two of the goals have taken away from a win from Liverpool, resulting in draws against Chelsea and Arsenal. Mo Salah is Liverpool’s top-scorer. His twelve goals are as many as last-place Huddersfield have scored as a team. Overall, Liverpool are a team without an obvious weakness and certainly the team to beat in English football.

Meanwhile, Arsenal, the last team to record an unbeaten season in English football, come into today’s game in 5th. They are having a successful season, one that has included a 23-game unbeaten streak across all competitions. However, they have been unable to challenge the success of teams like Liverpool and Manchester City. Arguably, Arsenal is in a rebuilding phase after the departure of long-time manager Arsène Wenger. However, beyond that, they are still one of the better teams in the Premier League and have dominated the Europa League this season. However, it will be a tough game against Liverpool. Arsenal is winless in their last five Premier League visits to Anfield and winless in their last seven matches against Liverpool in all competitions. However, they remain one of the few teams that could feasibly end Liverpool’s unbeaten season so expect a match to remember at Anfield today.

Honourable mentions around the globe go to Premiership Rugby, where Harlequins host Wasps at Twickenham in the ‘Big Game 11'. Harlequins had a great performance in their last home game at the Stoop, securing a 28-26 victory that ended Exeter’s unbeaten season. Meanwhile, Wasps are hungry for a win after winning only one of their last twelve games. The teams are tied on points and this game will determine who will round out the top four going into the new year. While Saracens and Exeter dominate the premiership, there are very real fights for position further down the table. Be sure you don’t miss this exciting match between two teams hungry for success. Elsewhere, in international cricket, the third Test between Australia and India continues with India looking to extend their dominant lead over Australia. In college football, Clemson and Notre Dame face off in the Cotton Bowl, one of the college football championships semi-finals, at AT&T Park in Arlington. In the NBA, the Atlanta Hawks host the Cleveland Cavaliers at State Farm Arena. UFC 232 takes place at the Forum in Los Angeles, with Jon Jones and Alexander Gustafsson facing off in the title fight.

Whatever you’re watching, enjoy!
