Event of the Day: Formula One Singapore Grand Prix

Our event of the day is the Formula One Singapore Grand Prix at the Marina Bay Street Circuit. Lewis Hamilton of Mercedes took a surprising pole position during yesterday’s qualifying with a sensational first lap. Despite Mercedes tending to struggle in Singapore, Hamilton recorded one of the fastest laps of his career. The British driver’s time of 1:36.015 was enough to secure pole ahead of Max Verstappen of Red Bull, who was 0.3 seconds slower. Sebastian Vettel qualified in third, 0.6 seconds behind Hamilton.

The Mercedes driver extended his lead at the top of the driver’s championship with victory in Italy two weeks ago. This was even more damaging for Vettel as he failed to make the podium for only the second time in the last seven grand prix races. The German had appeared to be making up ground on his title rival after his dominant win in Belgium. However, Hamilton claimed first place in Italy in controversial circumstances to edge closer to a coveted fifth world title. With the lead at the summit of the driver’s championship swinging from one to the other throughout the season, this is the greatest gap that there has been between the pair. Following the conclusion of today’s grand prix, just six races remain. Vettel, also going for a fifth world title, will need a strong performance to pull himself back into contention. It’s another crucial weekend of Formula One. Expect a thrilling race!

Honourable mentions around the globe go to the final day of the Davis Cup semi-final between Croatia and the USA at the Krešimir Ćosić Hall in Zadar. The hosts currently lead 2-1. Steve Johnson has to beat world number six Marin Čilić in order to take the tie into a fifth rubber. This would see Borna Coric face Frances Tiafoe to decide who will play France in the Davis Cup final. Further tennis action can be found on the WTA World Tour, which stops off in Canada for the Coupe Banque National, and Japan for the Japan Women’s Open. A tasty Premiership Rugby encounter can be found at the Ricoh Arena in Coventry, where Wasps play Leicester with the two rugby union giants currently level on points on the league table. Elsewhere in the UK, West Ham will hope to pick up their first win of the Premier League season against Everton at Goodison Park. Juventus host Sassuolo in Serie A, and Feyenoord travel to AZ Alkmaar in Eredivisie. In La Liga, Seville are at home to Getafe, whilst in the Bundesliga, Werder Bremen welcome Nurnberg. Ligue 1 action comes from the Orange Vélodrome, where Marseille play Guingamp. In the MLS, D.C. United face New York Red Bulls in Washington. Additional sporting action in the States comes from Tropicana Field, where the Tampa Bay Rays play the Oakland Athletics in the final match of a three game MLB series. In the NFL, the New England Patriots travel to the Jacksonville Jaguars in a rematch of last year’s AFC Conference game. Meanwhile in golf, LPGA action comes from the final day of the Evian Championship in France, whilst the European Tour has the final round of the KLM Open in the Netherlands. There’s world championship action in Rowing and Volleyball, whilst the World Triathlon Series concludes on the Gold Coast. In Berlin, runners will tackle 26.2 miles at the Berlin Marathon, whilst in Spain, road cyclists will ride the final 112.3 kilometres of the Vuelta a España
