Event of the Day: Final Day of 147th Open Championship

Our event of the day is the final day of the 147th Open Championship at Carnoustie Golf Club on the Scottish Coast. The only golf Major to take place outside of the United States, the Open boasts a prize fund of $10.5 million. Windy conditions are predicted throughout the day so there is a real sense of unknown concerning how the course will play. Last year’s winner Jordan Spieth is in a strong position to defend his title. The American shares the lead after a strong showing in the third round. Victory on the Scottish Coast would make him the first man to retain the Open in ten years. Fellow Americans Kevin Kisner and Xander Schauffele are also nine under par. Victory would be a huge achievement for 34-year-old Kisner, who has only managed one top ten finish at a major in his career. At just 24, Schauffele is also searching for his maiden major title.

Similarly, Tommy Fleetwood is aiming to secure his first major title. The world number 10 is very much in contention, sitting five under par after the first three days of action. Victory at Carnoustie would make him the first Englishman to win The Open in 26 years. Rory McIlroy, who is in the hunt for his first major title in four years, is also four shots off the lead. He is level at five under par with legend of the game Tiger Woods. The American racked up six birdies and is in contention, he won his last major 10 years ago. Will a new major winner be crowned at the end of the day or will a big name secure another victory? An exciting final round at golf’s most historic major is in store.

Honourable mentions around the globe go to the German Grand Prix in Hockenheim. Lewis Hamilton will look to make up ground on Sebastian Vettel, who extended his lead at the top of the driver’s championship following his victory at the British Grand Prix two weeks ago. Vettel starts today in pole position, Valltteri Bottas in second and Hamilton down in 14th after suffering hydraulic failure in qualifying. In San Francisco, the champions of the Rugby Sevens World Cup will be crowned. Meanwhile in Rugby League, Wakefield Trinity take on Hull FC in Super League action at the Mobile Rocket Stadium. There are also NRL fixtures: the Sea Eagles play the Roosters in Sydney and the Warriors face the Storm in Auckland. The annual commemoration of the 2012 Olympics takes place at the London Stadium, where it’s the second day of competition at the Anniversary Games. Highlights from Day 2 include finals in the men’s and women’s 200m and the 4x100m relay. Elsewhere in the United Kingdom, the Women’s Hockey World Cup continues with four group stage matches, including reigning champions the Netherlands in action against South Korea. County Championship cricket action can be found across the UK with three Division One fixtures. The fifth ODI between Zimbabwe and Pakistan takes place at Queens Sports Club, Pakistan having already convincingly wrapped up the series. Meanwhile, the first ODI in a three-match series between the West Indies and Bangladesh commences at the Providence Stadium in Guyana. Stage 15 of the Tour de France begins in Millau and finishes in Carcassonne, with riders getting a well-earned rest day tomorrow following what will be a demanding 181.5 kilometres. Tennis action on the ATP World Tour can be found in Umag, Bastad and Newport, whilst the WTA tour has events in Bucharest and Gstaad.

Whatever you’re watching, enjoy!
