Event of the Day: England versus India

Our event of the day is the Cricket World Cup Match between England and India at Edgbaston in Birmingham. England must win this match to stay in the fight for a place in the knockout stages. Meanwhile, India will look to maintain their unbeaten record. This is a match you won’t want to miss. England have it all to do today. With their record of 4-3, they find themselves battling for a place in the knockout stages. Despite convincing wins against South Africa, Bangladesh, the West Indies and Afghanistan, they have been upset by Pakistan and Sri Lanka and were unable to overcome the dominance of Australia. Joe Root has helped England greatly so far. The stylish batsman is the fourth highest run scorer in the competition, having recorded 432 runs so far. Meanwhile, Jofra Archer is proving just why he was worth a call-up to the main squad. Archer is the joint-third highest wicket taker, having taken 16. Furthermore, he leads in maiden overs bowled with 7. However, today is a must-win for the side. To ensure progression in the competition, they will have to win both their remaining games with the second key game against New Zealand next week. This goal will be made harder by their opponents today.

India are 5-0-1, the only undefeated team left in the World Cup. They have not been fazed by their opponents, no matter their calibre. Boasting a strong all-round squad, their batting efforts have been led by Rohit Sharma. He is the sixth-best run scorer in the tournament with 338. Sharma also has the third best batting average in the tournament at 84.50. Despite playing the tournament hosts, India may be the ones who hold the field advantage. Edgbaston’s pitch could favour the slow spinners preferred by India. This might be the edge India needs to see off England and maintain their perfect record. England will not be an easy win for India however, Joe Root and Jofra Archer will cause trouble with bat and ball and the whole team will be desperate for success. England will no doubt need to find something extra if they want to beat one of the tournament’s best teams. Whatever happens, this is a match you won’t want to miss.
