Event of the Day: Dell Technologies Championship
Our event of the day is the final day of the Dell Technologies Championship at TPC Boston in Norton. This is the second of four PGA Tour playoffs. Following today’s action, the top seventy players will progress to the BMW Championship next week. This will then get whittled down to the top thirty golfers, who will battle it out at the Tour Championship to be crowned the winner of the FedEX Cup.
Mexican Abraham Ancer currently, and somewhat surprisingly, leads the field, sitting at 13 under par. However, he has numerous players breathing down his neck. Bryson DeChambeau hit a stunning 63 in the third round to pull himself into contention. The young American is just one shot behind Ancer. Englishman Tyrrell Hatton also shot 63, the lowest score of his PGA Tour career, on Saturday. The 26-year-old, going for his first PGA title, is currently joint second on 12 below par. Compatriot Justin Rose, who had led after the first two days of action, is a further shot behind. The world number 4 is level with Australian Cameron Smith. Jordan Spieth and Rory McIlroy, two of the great golfers of their generation, have both blown hot and cold this year. However, they showed flashes of their brilliance yesterday as Spieth hit 68 and McIlroy 66. The pair both sit on 9 below par. Tiger Woods recovered from his 72 in round one by hitting a strong 66 and a 68 to leave himself 7 under par. The golfing great is the only man to be crowned FedEX Cup champion on more than one occasion. A solid final round will put him in a healthy position going into the BMW Championship. With FedEX Cup glory getting tantalisingly closer, and the added incentive of $1.6 million for today’s winner, there’s everything to play for going into the final round.
Honourable mentions around the globe go to day 8 at the US Open. Today will see more last 16 action. Maria Sharapova impressively overcame tenth seed Jeļena Ostapenko to set up a clash with Carla Suárez Navarro of Spain. Last year’s beaten finalist Maddison Keys will play twenty-ninth seed Dominika Cibulková. In the men’s draw, five-time US Open winner Roger Federer is up against the unseeded John Millman, whilst double US Open champion Novak Djokovic plays João Sousa from Portugal. Elsewhere in the States, a multitude of MLB fixtures are taking place as the playoffs draw ever closer. The Oakland Athletics and the New York Yankees play their first match in a three game series at the Oakland Alameda Coliseum. The second stage of the Tour of Britain begins in Cranbrook and finishes in the picturesque Devonshire town of Barnstaple.
