Event of the Day: USPGA Tour Championship Day 1

Our event of the day...

is the opening day of the USPGA Tour Championship at East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta, Georgia. The tournament marks the final instalment of the 2017 FedEx Cup with the USPGA Tour Champion to be decided by the end of play on Sunday. Jordan Spieth is favourite to win the title for the second time following his success in 2015 and winning The Open earlier this year. This would make Spieth only the third person to win two FedEx Cups, matching Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson. Golf’s biggest names will be looking for a positive start today in their bid to win the $10 million prize money and one of golf’s biggest accolades. It’s set to be a day of incredibly high quality play.

Americans Spieth, Justin Thomas, Dustin Johnson, Australian Marc Leishman and Spain’s Jon Rahm are the top 5 going into the tournament and a win from any of them would guarantee them the overall title. There are some big names in the chasing pack with Americans Rickie Fowler and Brooks Koepka, Englishmen Justin Rose and Paul Casey as well as Japanese golfer Hideki Matsuyama all in the mix as well. Last year’s winner Rory McIlroy hasn’t made the 30 player cut this year, showing just how strong the field is. The title truly is up for grabs with many high-profile golfers in with a chance.

Honourable mentions...

aroind the globe go to the Super League Super 8s fixture between Salford Red Devils and St Helens at the AJ Bell Stadium. It is the last round of the regular season before the play-offs. The Red Devils have experienced a poor run of form since the Super 8s began, losing five of their six fixtures before today and dropping down from fourth to seventh. St Helens have been consistent, winning three and losing three and now find themselves in fourth and in with a chance of a playoff-off spot.

In cricket, it’s the second ODI between England and West Indies at Trent Bridge in Nottingham. England won the series opener at Old Trafford by a comfortable 7 wicket margin with Jonny Bairstow scoring 100 not out after being installed at the top of the order. In the NFL, the Los Angeles Rams take on the San Francisco 49ers at Levi’s Stadium in California. Last time out the 49ers lost 12-9 to the Seattle Seahawks while the Rams were defeated 27-20 by the Washington Redskins. The Moselle Open continues with second seed David Goffin in action against Nicolás Almagro in Metz, France.
