Event of the Day: Men’s French Open Final

Our event of the day is the men’s French Open Final from Roland Garros as Stan Wawrinka takes on Rafael Nadal. It is set up to be a thrilling spectacle on the Philippe-Chatrier court this afternoon. Nadal comfortably beat Austrian Dominic Thiem in straight sets in his semi-final. The Spaniard is aiming for an incredible 10th Roland Garros title and a win today would see him move past Pete Sampras into second place in the all time men’s Grand Slam list with 15 titles. Wawrinka came through a titanic five set win against world number one Andy Murray to make it to the final. The Swiss has one French Open title to his name after winning in 2015 against Novak Djokovic. A Wawrinka win against the king of clay this afternoon would see him win his 4th Grand Slam title of his career. After a fortnight of action, it comes down to two of the very best fighting it out for the French Open title.

Honourable mentions around the globe go to Game 6 of the NHL Stanley Cup Finals as the Nashville Predators take on the Pittsburgh Penguins. The Penguins are on the verge of history; a win would see them secure back-to-back Stanley Cups a feat no NHL club has achieved this century. Pittsburgh have a 3-2 series lead after winning Game 5 emphatically 6-0. There is the FIFA U-20 World Cup final in Suwon, South Korea as England face Venezuela. It is the first time both nations have made the final at this level and should be a thrilling game. The battle between Ferrari and Mercedes heads to North America for the Canadian Grand Prix in Montreal, Lewis Hamilton starts in pole position with Championship leader Sebastian Vettel 2nd on the grid. The Oval is the setting for the ICC Champions Trophy Group B match between India and South Africa - the winner goes to the Semi finals, the loser is knocked out.
