Event of the Day: China Open Day 3

Our event of the day is the third day of the Volvo China Open at the Topwin Golf and Country Club in Beijing. Halfway through the 24th edition of the tournament co-sanctioned by the European and the Asian Tour, Matt Wallace from England is in the lead with a score of 135, nine-under par. Three players are one shot behind him: Nacho Elvira of Spain, American Sihwan Kim and Australia’s Jason Scrivener, all of whom played very well in some difficult conditions during the windy second day and are eight-under. Wallace, who won his second European Tour event at the Hero Indian Open in March, was excellent on the opening day when he carded a seven-under par first round score of 65.

Defending champion, Alexander Lévy from France, the only player to have won the tournament more than once (in 2014 and 2017), is currently far from leaders being two-under for the tournament, in 50th place. Homegrown players and previous champions, Li Haotong (2016) and Wu Ashun (2015), also made the cut and are four-under and one-under par, respectively. Another Chinese golfer, Jin Daxing, who led the way after the first round, is now tied with countryman Li in 22nd position. Three previous champions, Australian Brett Rumford, Belgian Nicolas Colsaerts and Yang Yong-eun of South Korea, all missed the cut and won’t be involved over the weekend. Who will enter the final day closest to becoming the new Volvo China Open champion? The thrilling contest in Beijing continues.

Honourable mentions around the globe go to the AFL game between the Geelong Cats and the Sydney Swans at the GMHBA Stadium in South Geelong.
