Event of the Day: Oslo Bislett Games

Our event of the day is the Oslo Bislett Games at the Bislett Stadium in Oslo. A total of 65 world records have been set at this annual track and field meeting since its inaugurating season in 1965. The IAAF Diamond League event attracts the best world athletes and it will be no different this year – 20 world champions and eight Olympic gold medallists will be present at the Oslo contest. One of the main events of the Diamond League’s fifth meeting of the season, is the men’s 400m hurdles event with a highly anticipated showdown between local favourite and world champion Karsten Warholm and Qatar’s Abderrahman Samba, who has already broken 48 seconds on three occasions this season. Warholm set the national record at the Bislett Stadium previously and went even faster last Thursday at the Diamond League meeting in Rome, with a lap of 47.82s but Samba beat him in the last 100m and set a new Asian record with a stunning 47.48s.

In the men’s high jump, the main candidates for victory are the World Indoor Championships winner, Danil Lysenko of Russia, and Qatari Mutaz Essa Barshim, winner of the Doha and Eugene Diamond League meetings. The traditional Dream Mile race will see the world champion in 1500m, Elijah Manangoi from Kenya, try and resist the challenge of home crowd favourites, Filip and Henrik Ingebrigtsen. An interesting race is expected in the women’s 3000m steeplechase. Kenya’s Hyvin Kiyeng is a favourite after victory at the Rome Diamond League event with a world leading time of 9.04:96, although USA’s Emma Coburn and Courtney Frerichs and Norway’s Karoline Bjerkeli Grøvdal are also in contention. It’s going to be a great day of athletics in Oslo.

Honourable mentions around the globe go to Game 5 of the Stanley Cup Finals between the Vegas Golden Knights and the Washington Capitals at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. After losing the first match, the Capitals have turned the series with three straight wins and could win the Stanley Cup if they win tonight. It’s Day 12 of the 2018 French Open at Roland Garros in Paris. In the MLB, the Texas Rangers come up against the Houston Astros at Globe Life Park in Arlington. England and Costa Rica play their last warm-up match ahead of the World Cup at Elland Road in Leeds in a Football riendly International. It’s the opening day of both, the European Tour’s Shot Clock Masters at the Diamond Country Club in Atzenbrugg and the PGA Tour’s FedEx St. Jude Classic at the TPC Southwind in Memphis. In Super League, Wakefield Trinity face Wigan Warriors at the Mobile Rocket Stadium in Wakefield. In cricket, it’s Day 2 of the 1st Test between West Indies and Sri Lanka at the Queen’s Park Oval in Port of Spain; while in the Royal London One Day Cup, Yorkshire go head-to-head with Northamptonshire at Headingley in Leeds.

Whatever you’re watching, enjoy!
