Event of the Day: San Antonio Spurs versus Cleveland Cavaliers

Our event of the day is the NBA game between the San Antonio Spurs and the Cleveland Cavaliers at the AT&T Center in San Antonio. The Spurs sit in fourth place in the Western Conference following two straight defeats, away to the Toronto Raptors (86-83) on Friday and at home to the Indiana Pacers (94-86) on Sunday. The Cavaliers are third in the Eastern Conference with a 27-18 record, but are going through a crisis with just one victory in their last six matches. On Saturday, they were heavily defeated at home by the Oklahoma City Thunder, 148-124. San Antonio still have the best home record in the league, with 19 wins and just three losses on their home court. This is their first meeting with Cleveland in the current season.
Spurs’ small forwards Kawhi Leonard and Rudy Gay are once again unavailable, Leonard due to a quad muscle injury and Gay due to a heel injury. Shooting guard Manu Ginóbili and Center Pau Gasol are also missing due to injury with thigh and wrist issues respectively. Power forward LaMarcus Aldridge leads the team this campaign with 22.3 points and 8.7 rebounds per game on average. The Cavaliers are a high-scoring side with 109.7 points per match, fifth most in the league. The absolute star of the team is the four-time MVP of the league, small forward LeBron James, who averages 26.8 points (fourth best) and 8.7 assists (fifth best in the NBA). It should be a thrilling contest at the AT&T Center.

Honourable mentions around the globe go to the EFL Cup return leg of the semi-final between Bristol City and Manchester City at Ashton Gate Stadium in Bristol. The Citizens won the first leg 2-1 with a late goal from forward Sergio Aguero. It’s Day 9 of the 2018 Australian Open at Melbourne Park. In the Big Bash League, the Sydney Sixers take on the Melbourne Stars at the Sydney Cricket Ground. In further NBA action, the Los Angeles Lakers host their old rivals, the Boston Celtics, at the Staples Center in Los Angeles; whilst the champion Golden State Warriors face the New York Knicks at the Oracle Arena in Oakland. Bangladesh and Zimbabwe play an ODI at the Shere Bangla National Stadium in Dhaka. There’s plenty of action in the NHL as the Boston Bruins face off against the New Jersey Devils at the TD Garden in Boston, while the Nashville Predators are up against the Tampa Bay Lightning at Nashville’s Bridgestone Arena. In the Copa del Rey quarter-final return leg, Sevilla face Atlético Madrid at the Estadio Ramón Sánchez Pizjuán in Seville.
