Event of the Day: Arsenal v Liverpool

Our event of the day is the Premier League match between Arsenal and Liverpool at the Emirates Stadium in London. Arsenal ended their three-game run without a win in the league with 1-0 victory against Newcastle United at home last Saturday, and they reached the EFL Cup semi-finals in midweek with a 1-0 win over West Ham United. Liverpool currently occupy the last Champions League spot, the fourth place in the Premiership, with 34 points, one more than Arsenal who are in fifth position. They are unbeaten in the last 12 games in all competitions, and recorded a convincing 4-0 win away to Bournemouth on Sunday.
The Gunners will be up for revenge after suffering a heavy 4-0 defeat away to Liverpool back in August. They will be without striker Olivier Giroud and midfielder Aaron Ramsey due to hamstring injuries, however defensive midfielder Francis Coquelin and defender Shkodran Mustafi could recover from injury in time to be available for selection. The league’s leading goalscorer with 14 goals, Mohamed Salah, will be the main threat in the Reds’ team. Midfielder Emre Can returns after suspension, but Alberto Moreno is still out with ankle injury. With 42 goals scored in the last 10 Premier League clashes between the sides and Liverpool scoring 24 goals away from home this season, this fixture should deliver a highly entertaining game at the Emirates.

Honourable mentions around the globe go to the Premiership Rugby match between Worcester Warriors and London Irish at Sixways in Worcester. The Warriors have 14 points, better only than Irish who have just eight points from the first 10 rounds of the season. This clash between the league’s bottom two teams is a huge game in deciding who will be relegated this season. In the Big Bash League, the Adelaide Strikers host the Sydney Thunder at the Adelaide Oval. Also in cricket, India and Sri Lanka play their 2nd T20 at the Holkar Cricket Stadium in Indore. In the NBA, the Portland Trail Blazers welcome the Denver Nuggets to the Moda Center in Portland; while the Golden State Warriors take on the Los Angeles Lakers at the Oracle Arena in Oakland. In the NHL, there is the duel of the Calgary Flames and the Montreal Canadiens at the Scotiabank Saddledome in Calgary. In further football action, there is the La Liga encounter between Espanyol and Atlético Madrid at the Estadi Cornellà-El Prat in Cornellà de Llobregat; and in Serie A, the match between Cagliari and Fiorentina at the Sardegna Arena in Cagliari.
