Event of the Day: GolfSixes Day 2
Our event of the day is the second and final day of the GolfSixes tournament at the Centurion Club in St Albans. The European Tour event’s second edition presents the exciting new, short format in which 16 teams consisting of two players each, contest six holes using the greensome match play format. The 32-player-field includes golfers from 12 different nations. Following yesterday’s group matches, the tournament continues with the knock-out stages, starting with quarter-final clashes between the two top teams from each of the four groups. This year, four wildcard teams were added to the competition in the shape of the European Captains, European Women, England Women and Ireland.
The European Captains team, comprised of Ryder Cup captain Thomas Bjørn and Solheim Cup captain Catriona Matthew, became the first male and female professionals to play together in a competitive European Tour match. However, they didn’t make it to the quarter-finals, earning just one point from a draw in Group B. The winners of last season’s inaugural GolfSixes, Denmark’s Lucas Bjerregaard and Thorbjørn Olesen, were also eliminated on Saturday, finishing third in Group A with four points, due to a weaker total hole differential than European Women - Carlota Ciganda from Spain and England’s Mel Reid. Last year’s finalist with Scott Hend, Sam Brazel from Australia is giving it another go in the fight for the trophy, this time teamed up with Wade Ormsby. They topped Group B with seven points and will face Ciganda and Reid in the first quarter-final. Elsewhere, Team Thailand take on Team South Korea; England come up against France; and the wildcard teams of Ireland and England Women face each other. The eventual winners will win €100,000 each from the €1 million prize fund. Who will it be? Enjoy the action at the Centurion Club and find out.
Honourable mentions around the globe go to the last day of the EFL Championship with the highlight been the clash between Cardiff City and Reading at the Cardiff City Stadium. Cardiff fight to hold onto the second position they currently occupy with 89 points, one more than Fulham in third, and earn direct promotion to the Premier League. Reading, on the other hand, are fighting against relegation, sitting in 19th place with 43 points, two more than Burton who sit in the relagation position of 22nd. It’s Day 3 of the 2018 Giro d’Italia, with the third stage from Beersheba to Eilat, a 229km hilly stage. In La Liga, there’s the big El Classico match between Barcelona and Real Madrid at the Camp Nou in Barcelona, while in the Premier League Chelsea host Liverpool at Stamford Bridge in London. The Spanish Moto GP takes place at the Circuito de Jerez in Jerez de la Frontera. It’s the final day of the ATP World Tour BMW Open at the Tennis club MTTC Iphitos in Munich; and the final day of the 2018 World Team Table Tennis Championships at the Halmstad Arena in Sweden. In the NBA Playoffs, the New Orleans Pelicans come up against the Golden State Warriors at the Smoothie King Center in New Orleans, whilst in the NHL Stanley Cup Playoffs, the San Jose Sharks face the Vegas Golden Knights at the SAP Center in San Jose.
