Event of the day

Our event of the day is all the action from Day 8 of the Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast in Queensland, Australia. 24 gold medal events will take place today, and one of those that will be a highlight will be the women’s 200m final at the Carrara Stadium. The favourite is Bahamian Shaunae Miller-Uibo, who was the Rio Olympics champion in the 400m event, where she famously dived over the line to win the title. Also in athletics, Australian Kurtis Marschall and Canada’s Shawnacy Barber are the main candidates to triumph in the men’s Pole Vault final. In the inaugural Commonwealth Games beach volleyball tournament, an outstanding final in the women’s gold medal match is expected, when Canadian world number one pair Melissa Humana-Paredes and Sarah Pavan come up against home crowd favourites Taliqua Clancy and Mariafe Artacho del Solar.

Elsewhere, the men’s and women’s cross-country cycling finals are scheduled at Nerang Mountain Bike Trails; while in diving, England’s synchro Olympic champion Jack Laugher will fight for gold in the 3m springboard discipline at the Optus Aquatic Centre. In Rhythmic Gymnastics, there’s the individual all-around final at the Coomera Indoor Sports Centre. The Women’s 50m Rifle Prone is taking place at the Belmont Shooting Centre in Brisbane. The wrestling contest starts today with men’s 74kg, and women’s 53kg and 76kg freestyle events taking place at the Carrara Sports and Leisure Centre. The host nation Australia are runaway leaders in the medal table with 145 medals (57 gold). We are set for another entertaining day of sport on the Gold Coast.

Honourable mentions around the globe go to the first game of the NHL playoff series between the Anaheim Ducks and San Jose Sharks at the Honda Center in Anaheim. The Ducks ended the regular season in fifth place in the Western Conference with 101 points, while their Pacific Division rivals, the Sharks, were sixth in the Conference with 100 points. In MLB, the Chicago Cubs face the Pittsburgh Pirates at Wrigley Field in Chicago. In the Europa League second leg matches of the quarter-finals, Marseille take on RB Leipzig at the Stade Vélodrome in Marseille, whilst Red Bull Salzburg go head-to-head with Lazio at the Red Bull Arena Salzburg. It’s the opening day of the PGA Tour’s RBC Heritage at the Harbour Town Golf Links on Hilton Head Island. In the Indian Premier League, the Sunrisers Hyderabad host the champion Mumbai Indians at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad. India Women and England Women play their 3rd ODI at the Vidarbha Cricket Association Stadium in Nagpur. In Premier League Darts, Phase 2 starts with Week 10 matches at the FlyDSA Arena in Sheffield. In the NRL, the Roosters meet the Rabbitohs at the Allianz Stadium in Sydney, while in the Super League the Widnes Vikings encounter Hull FC at the Halton Stadium in Widnes.

Whatever you’re watching, enjoy!
