Event of the Day: Men's World Rugby Sevens Series London Day 1

Our event of the day is day one of the Men’s tournament of the World Rugby Sevens Series at Twickenham Stadium in London. This is the ninth tournament of the season with just the tenth event remaining, next weekend in Paris. The 15 core nations will be present along with Ireland as the invitational 16th team. The defending champions are the Scottish side who have won the past two seasons at the London Sevens, however they currently sit 10th in the season standings going into the event. The two favourites for this year’s London 7s and for the overall championship, currently sitting first and second respectively, are Fiji and reigning World Rugby Sevens champions, South Africa.

The Fiji team especially has been in great form recently, winning four of the last five tournaments and finishing 3rd in the fifth. Their captain Jerry Tuwai is a player to watch out for, along with his teammate Eroni Sau who has scored 33 tries this season. The English squad will hope to make the most of home field advantage and be in the mix for the final. Other likely contenders include New Zealand, Australia and the USA. Be sure to keep an eye out for the American flyer, Carlin Isles, who has scored 35 tries this season. It should be an exciting day at Twickenham with thrilling end to end action from the best sevens players in the world.

Honourable mentions around the globe go to game three of the NHL Stanley Cup Finals between the Washington Capitals and the Las Vegas Golden Knights at the Capital One Arena in Washington, D.C.. The first two matchups in Las Vegas were spilt evenly with Las Vegas taking game one and the Capitals winning game two. Both of these franchises are looking for their first ever Stanley Cup victory, but with vastly different story lines. For the Golden Knights a victory would be unprecedented and make them the first expansion team to win the Cup in their inaugural season. For the Capitals a victory would achieve a long awaited dream for the 44-year-old franchise and redeem them from multiple disappointments the last few years. There is AFL action with a matchup between the West Coast Eagles and St Kilda at the Perth Stadium, in cricket it is day two of the 2nd Test between Pakistan and England at Headingly, and the Italian MotoGP qualifying takes place. The French Open at Roland Garros heats up with day seven of the tournament and in Super Rugby, the Chiefs play the Crusaders in Hamilton.

Whatever you’re watching, enjoy!
