Event of the Day: Wimbledon Tennis Championships Day 7

Our event of the day is Day 7 of the 2018 Wimbledon Tennis Championships, held at the All England Lawn Tennis Club in London, England, as the prestigious tennis tournament moves into its second week. Monday’s schedule sees the Swiss maestro Roger Federer going up against 22nd seed Adrian Mannarino from France. Federer has been progressing serenely so far in this year’s tournament, having not dropped a single set as yet,  and will expect to brush aside his French opponent, who had to make it through 5 sets in the last round. Federer is the men’s defending champion, and will be looking to extend his excellent Wimbledon record, and take his number of titles to 9, meaning his Grand Slam record would move to 21 overall. One of his main rivals for the title is Rafael Nadal who, having secured first place in the Men’s Rankings thanks to his third round win, will go up against the unseeded Jiří Veselý from the Czech Republic – playing on Centre Court afterwards.

One of the most interesting ties of the round will be when Gael Monfils goes up against Kevin Anderson, the eighth seed in this year’s tournament. In the Ladies’ singles, Serena Williams is facing Evgeniya Rodina, and Angelique Kerber is taking on Belinda Bencic. The first week was an exciting one that saw its fair share of shocks. In the ladies’ draw, only one of the top ten seeds—Karolína Plíšková—emerged from an opening week, which was littered with big-name casualties such as no.2 seed Caroline Wozniacki, defending champion Garbiñe Muguruza, world number one Simona Halep, and US open champion Sloane Stephens. As the tournament enters the second week, players are also going to have to deal with the unusually consistent spell of hot weather Britain seems to be having, with temperatures often hitting 30 degrees. Will Federer once again turn back the clock and emerge victorious at his favourite tournament?

Honourable mentions around the globe go to  Stage 3 of the Tour de France. Stage 3 is in Cholet, a 35.5km Team Time-Trial. Mark Cavendish describes it as “open roads and it's relatively straightforward,” and it should be an exciting stage.  In Major League Baseball, there are 3 interesting fixtures to keep an eye on. The Baltimore Orioles  take on the New York Yankees at Oriole Park at Camden Yards, Baltimore in a double header. In another back-to-back double game, the New York Mets go up against the Philadelphia Phillies at Citi Field, New York. Finally, the San Francisco Giants face the Chicago Cubs, at AT&T Park, in San Francisco.

Whatever you’re watching, enjoy!
