Event of the Day: New York Yankees versus Washington Nationals

Our event of the day is the Major League Baseball inter-league match between the New York Yankees and the Washington Nationals. The American League East leading Bronx Bombers return to Yankee Stadium after an 11 game road stretch. They will host the Washington Nationals, who are currently atop the National League East. Both clubs are playing good ball at the moment. Washington currently holds a record of 36-27 while New York is 42-19 and have won nine of their last eleven games. The Nationals have been bitten by the injury bug in recent days. Pitchers Stephen Strasburg and Brandon Kintzler were both put on the Disabled List this past weekend. However, the Nats should see their All Star second baseman Daniel Murphy return to the lineup against the Yanks.

New York will send big lefty CC Sabathia to the mound against the Nationals right hander Tanner Roark. The 37-year old Sabathia, a former Cy Young Winner, is 3-1 as a starter this season with a 3.59 earned run average (ERA). His counterpart on the hill hasn’t been as fortunate so far this year. Although he holds an ERA of 3.56 on the campaign, Roark’s record sits at 3-6 heading into today’s matchup. Roark has not had much run support from the Nats hitters this year. They showed up for Roark in his last outing though after Washington routed Tampa Bay 11-2 on June 6th. He will hope for more of the same as he faces off against the high-powered, heavy hitting Yankees lineup. Keep your eyes on the Yankee trio of sluggers Gary Sánchez, Giancarlo Stanton and Aaron Judge. It should be a great game between two of MLB’s best squads.

Honourable mentions around the globe go to the continuation of the South African Women’s Cricket Tour of England. England host South Africa at the County Cricket Ground in Hove for their second of three One Day Internationals. After losing by seven wickets in the opening match, England will have to win the next two ODIs to claim victory in the series. Other cricket matches taking place today include the County Cricket Championship Division One match between Somerset and Nottinghamshire. Pakistan’s Tour of the UK and Ireland continues as they travel up to Edinburgh in a series of two Twenty20 Internationals against Scotland. The opening match of the Netherlands Tri-Nation T20 Series will take place between the Netherlands and Ireland at Hazelaarweg in Rotterdam. In International Football Friendlies, Poland host Lithuania in Warsaw. Japan plays their final warm-up match in advance of the 2018 FIFA World Cup as they meet with Paraguay at Tivoli-Neu Stadium in Innsbruck, Austria. ATP and WTA World Tour tennis action continues with the 2nd day of the Libéma Open
