This Week in Sport: 29th April − 5th May 2024

There are some exciting sporting events taking place around the world this week. On Monday, the Vegas Golden Knights host the Dallas Stars in the NHL Playoffs, Bayern Munich take on Real Madrid in the UEFA Champions League Semifinals on Tuesday, and the Los Angeles Clippers face the Dallas Mavericks in the NBA Playoffs on Wednesday. On Thursday, the Sunrisers Hyderabad play the Rajasthan Royals in the Indian Premier League, and Friday will see the Madrid Open continue.

Heading into the weekend, the Giro d’Italia begins on Saturday, and Toulouse host Harlequins in the European Rugby Champions Cup Semifinals.

NHL: Vegas Golden Knights v Dallas Stars

Monday will see the Vegas Golden Knights take on the Dallas Stars in Game 4 of their Round 1 Playoff series in the NHL at the T-Mobile Arena. The reigning Champions, the Golden Knights, currently lead the series 2-1 going into this one, and a win here will take them within one win of progressing to the next round and closer to winning consecutive Stanley Cup titles. The Stars face an uphill battle to progress to Round 2 but are far from out of this series.

UEFA Champions League: Bayern Munich v Real Madrid

The UEFA Champions League enters the Semi-Final stage, and on Tuesday Bayern Munich host Real Madrid at the Allianz Arena for the first leg of the tie. Bayern narrowly beat Arsenal 3-2 on aggregate in the Quarterfinals on their hunt for their seventh Champions League title. Their opponents, who are looking for their 15th title in the competition, beat reigning Champions Manchester City on penalties to progress to the Semifinals.

NBA: Los Angeles Clippers v Dallas Mavericks

Crypto.com Arena, Los Angeles

On Wednesday, the Los Angeles Clippers host the Dallas Mavericks in Game 5 of Round 1 in the NBA Playoffs at the Crypto.com Arena. The series is currently tied 2-2, so the Clippers will be looking to utilise home advantage in this one to take them within one game of Round 2. The winner of this series progresses to the Western Conference Semifinals with a likely match-up with the Oklahoma City Thunder.

Indian Premier League: Sunrisers Hyderabad v Rajasthan Royals

Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium Hyderabad, Hyderabad

Thursday will see an exciting match in the Indian Premier League, as Sunrisers Hyderabad, who sit in fourth place, host top of the league Rajasthan Royals at the Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium Hyderabad. A win for the hosts will see them have a chance to move up to second place, with every team from second to sixth sitting on 10 points. They will face a tough task against the Royals, who sit comfortably at the top of the table, with 16 points and only one loss so far.

WTA & ATP Tour: Mutua Madrid Open Day 11

The Madrid Open continues Friday, as some of the best tennis players in the world compete for the title at Caja Mágica. Friday will see the ATP Semifinals take place, with reigning champion Carlos Alcaraz looking for his record third consecutive title in this competition, with the Men’s Singles Final taking place on Sunday. Friday will also see the WTA Doubles Semifinals take place, with the Women’s Singles tournament concluding on Saturday.

Giro d’Italia: Giro d’Italia Stage 1

Saturday 4th May 12:30PM GMT/2:30PM Local Time

Venaria Reale, Torino

On Saturday, the first cycling Grand Tour of the season begins with the Giro d’Italia. The riders will begin with a hilly stage, starting at Venaria Reale and finishing the day 140 kilometres later in Torino. Primož Roglič will not return to defend his 2023 title, and Tadej Pogačar and Geraint Thomas currently look favourites to win this year’s race.

European Rugby Champions Cup: Toulouse v Harlequins

Sunday 5th May 2:00PM GMT/4:00PM Local Time

Stadium de Toulouse, Toulouse

The European Rugby Champions Cup will see Semi-Final action on Sunday as Toulouse host Harlequins at the Stadium de Toulouse. Toulouse will be looking to claim their record sixth title and their first since the 2020/21 season. Harlequins are looking for their maiden title in the competition. In the other Semi-Final matchup, 2023 runners-up Leinster will face Northampton Saints on Saturday.
