Event of the day: Day 2 of the 2nd Test between England and India

Our event of the day is day two of the second Test match between England and India in London. England secured a thrilling victory in the first Test at Edgbaston, which should have led to a fascinating first day at Lord’s Cricket Ground. Both teams were kept on tender hooks with rain delays continuing to delay the start of play until the day was finally called off at 4pm.

After a historically good English summer, the first day of the Lord’s Test was a wash out for the first time in 17 years. In the first Test, both captains scored well, with England’s Joe Root grabbing 80 and Virat Kholi scoring 149 in the first innings and a 51 in the second. The Indian team will need to support their skipper more if they are to come out on top in the series. In team news, England have replaced Ben Stokes with Chris Woakes and brought in debutant Ollie Pope for the dropped Dawid Malan. In the Indian camp, fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah has failed in his race to fitness and will not represent his country at Lord's. With rain delaying the start at the home of cricket, we are set for an interesting Test as India attempt to fight back and make it 1 - 1 in London.

Honourable mentions around the globe go to the opening fixture of the English Premier League as Manchester United take on fellow title winners Leicester City. Fans will be interested to see if Leicester City can still perform without 2015/16 Player of the Year and high profile Manchester City signing Riyad Mahrez. World Cup star Harry Maguire and new signing Jonny Evans will look to steady the ship in defence with £47 million Manchester United signing Fred looking to make an instant impact if he makes the team. In the AFL, Round 21 kicks off with Essendon hosting St Kilda at the Docklands Stadium. NRL second placed side, the South Sydney Rabbitohs host third placed local rivals the Sydney Roosters in round 22 at Stadium Australia. Ligue 1 begins with a tough game for relegation escapees Toulouse as they host last years fourth placed team Marseille at the Stade Vélodrome.
