Event of the day

Our event of the day

is the opening day of the first edition of the Next Gen ATP Finals at the Fiera Milano stadium in Milan, Italy. The tournament showcases the future of the game with the best players from around the world, of the age of 21 and under, taking to the court. With most of these young players having had the best season of their career, fans can expect an entertaining five days of tennis. In an attempt to introduce more drama to the competition, the officials have rung the changes with a number of innovative new rules. The matches will be shorter with the best of five sets (the first to four games in each set) being declared the winner.

There will also be no lets, sudden death instead of deuce and a shot clock on the court to encourage faster and more intense matches. As to who will emerge victorious, the field is wide open. Andrey Rublev is the highest-ranked player in the tournament and heads Group A while Denis Shapovalov will also be in contention having beaten Juan Martín del Potro and Rafael Nadal at the Rogers Cup earlier this year. Gianluigi Quinzi is the wildcard while Karen Khachanov is the highest-ranked player in Group B. In a tournament like this all form and reputations go out of the window and everybody has a chance for success.

Honourable mentions

around the globe go to the most prestigious annual Thoroughbred race in Australia as the Melbourne Cup gets underway. English horse Marmelo – ridden by Hugh Bowman is the favourite to win the race that stops a nation.
