Event of the day

Our event of the day is the first day of The Players Championship held at TPC Sawgrass in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida. This PGA golf tournament, sometimes called the “Fifth Major” due to its prestige, is one of the largest golfing events in the world featuring big names including, Dustin Johnson, Rory Mcllroy, Jordan Spieth, Phil Mickelson, and Tiger Woods.

The main storylines of the event will of course be centred around Woods with maybe the most interesting being the reuniting of Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson on this course for the first time in 17 years. These two great rivals will be playing together for the first two rounds of the tournament along with the excellent Rickie Fowler. The tournament favourite is Dustin Johnson who has been the number one player in the world, according to the official world golf rankings, for 64 weeks, the longest run since Tiger was at the top for an all-time record of 281 weeks in 2010. Johnson will put this streak on the line against a very deep, talented field on one of the more difficult courses in golf. This should be a competition to remember as current and past greats all battle it out for the famous glass trophy.

Honourable mentions around the globe goes to the Premier League Darts week 14 competition. This exciting event will be held at the BHGE Arena in Aberdeen and has playoff implications for two players. Daryl Gurney and Gary Anderson will fight it out for the fourth and final spot to play in next week’s final at the O2 Arena in London. Other events happening globally include an MLB matchup between two quality teams, the Arizona Diamondbacks and Washington Nationals, held at Chase Field, a NRL matchup at Leichardt Oval between the Wests Tigers and the Cowboys, and an Indian Premier League matchup between the Delhi Daredevils and Sunrisers Hyderabad at Feroz Shah Kotla in Delhi. West Ham and Manchester United also play their second to last Premier League match at West Ham’s London Stadium while the Rocco Forte Sicilian Open starts up at the Verdura Golf and Spa Resort. Lastly there is a Game 7 in the NHL with the Winnipeg Jets facing the Nashville Predators at the Bridgestone Arena in Nashville, with the winner earning the right to play the Vegas Golden Knights in the Western Conference Finals.

Whatever you’re watching, enjoy!
