Our event of the day is Day 1 of the 2018 Wimbledon Tennis Championships at the All England Lawn Tennis Club in London. The third Grand Slam of the season marks its 132nd edition and is the world’s oldest tennis tournament. The opening day brings a number of singles matches in both the Men’s and Women's competitions. The defending champion in the men’s singles and winner of a record eight titles on the Wimbledon grass, Roger Federer of Switzerland, will start his title defence against Serbian Dušan Lajović. Third seed Marin Čilić will face Yoshihito Nishioka from Japan. The Croatian is one of the main challengers to Federer and is full of confidence after his triumph at Queen’s during his preparation for Wimbledon.
In what could be the match of the day, Swiss star Stan Wawrinka comes up against world number six, Grigor Dimitrov, of Bulgaria. 2016 finalist Milos Raonic from Canada goes head-to-head with Great Britain’s Liam Broady; while an interesting all-French duel is set to start between Gaël Monfils and Richard Gasquet. In the women’s singles, seven-time Wimbledon champion Serena Williams takes on Arantxa Rus; while her older sister Venus, winner on five occasions herself, will face Johanna Larsson. World No.2 and Australian Open champion, Caroline Wozniacki, starts the competition against Varvara Lepchenko; while former number one, Victória Azárenka, matches up with Ekaterina Alexandrova. Reigning US Open champion and current world number 4, Sloane Stephens, will step on the court to face Donna Vekić. A lot of great tennis is expected on the first day of the most prestigious tennis tournament in the world.
