Event of the day

Our event of the day is the Formula 1 British Grand Prix at Silverstone. It was first blood to Lewis Hamilton in qualifying as he secured an exciting pole position. The Mercedes driver qualified in first position yesterday with a lap time of 1:25.892. This was just 0.048 seconds quicker than his main title rival Sebastian Vettel of Ferrari. Fellow Ferrari teammate Kimi Räikkönen qualified third fastest. This weekend marks 10 years since Lewis Hamilton battled the elements to win his first Silverstone Grand Prix in memorable fashion. Hamilton will look to repeat this feat today in kinder conditions. In doing so, he would chalk up a record breaking sixth win at his home Grand Prix, his fifth in a row.

The Mercedes driver is one point behind four-time world champion Sebastian Vettel in the drivers’ championship. This comes after a disastrous race last weekend in Austria. Numerous technical and strategic errors forced Hamilton to retire despite having led the race. He consequently surrendered his lead at the top of the drivers’ championship after Vettel finished third. Can Hamilton right the wrongs of Austria to secure his place in British racing history?

Honourable mentions around the globe go to the third and final T20 international between England and India at the County Ground in Bristol. England levelled the series with a tightly fought win on Friday, having been humbled in an eight-wicket defeat three days earlier. There’s more T20 action across England with multiple Natwest T20 Blast fixtures. Following victory over hosts Zimbabwe, Pakistan meet Australia in the final of the T20 Tri Series in Harare. In Rugby League, the Titans face the Broncos in an NRL fixture in Robina, Australia, whilst Castleford Tigers take on Leeds Rhinos in a Super League fixture in Yorkshire. Elsewhere in the UK, Day 5 of the Henley Royal Regatta concludes today on the River Thames. Day 4 of the Dubai Duty Free Irish Open from the European Tour at Ballyliffin Golf Club takes place today. It’s also Day 4 of the PGA Tour Greenbrier Classic in White Sulphur Springs and the LPGA Thornberry Creek Classic. In the absence of World Cup football action today, there’s a local derby in MLS - New York City FC play the New York Red Bulls at Yankee Stadium. In Australian Rules Football, the West Coast Eagles matchup against Greater Western Sydney Giants. In MLB, there is a clash between the Seattle Mariners and the Colorado Rockies at Safeco Field. Stage 2 of the Tour de France begins in Mouilleron-Saint-Germain and finishes 182.5 kilometres later in La Roche-sur-Yon.

Whatever you’re watching, enjoy!
